Muay-Thai
Muay Thai was Developed in Thailand and began as a
close combat battlefield fighting skill that was in some cases more deadly than
the weapons it replaced. Since then it has become the prestigious national sport
of Thailand. Unlike western boxing and kickboxing, Muay Thai also known as "The
Science of Eight Limbs" allows the use of elbow and knee strikes in addition to
kicking and punching. Another thing that separates Muay Thai from Western fight
styles is the ability to clinch. In a clinch a Thai boxer will work to control
the opponent while setting up strikes that mainly consist of knees and elbows.
At the A.M.A.C we run an authentic Muay Thai class just like you would
find in Thailand! We start out with (2) 3 minute rounds of jumping rope to warm
up and then move on to a full body stretch from the neck down to make sure your
loose. Shadow Boxing for (2) 3 minute rounds is next to work form and flow. Then
we move into the bulk of the class which consists of training all 8 weapons.
Kicks, Punches, Knees, and Elbows as well as the Thai Clinch.
The class covers both offensive and defensive strategies while hitting Thai
pads, punch mits, and heavy bags as well as sparring. We like to isolate the
sparring into components sometimes working only boxing techniques, sometimes
clinch and knee sparring. Other times we will work just Kicks or elbows. New
students will be restricted to a slower pace until they are ready for heavier
contact. Advanced students will be allowed to put it all together and work all
techniques in a live sparring session.
Student safety is very important and always stressed! It is each students
responsability to control their pace even though they will be supervised. All
students are required to wear headgear, 16 oz. gloves, shin pads, groin cups,
and mouthpieces during sparring.
Our Muay Thai class will not only get you in the best shape possible, but it
will also teach the techniques that will bring you to the next level in the ring
or help you protect yourself in a self-defense situation. Many Mixed Martial
Arts (M.M.A) fighters from the U.F.C, Pride, etc. have recognized the benefits
that Muay Thai adds to their stand up and clinch game and have embraced the art.
The most well-rounded fighters now incorporate Muay Thai into their training. A
mixed martial arts fighter with the simple combination of Muay Thai and a good
ground game from Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) or wrestling can be a force to be
reckoned with in any ring! Anyone that has ever witnessed a real Muay Thai fight
will agree that the Thai Boxer is possibly one of the best conditioned and well
trained fighters on the planet!
